Gilbert’s Underground Kitchen was opened in 2015 as a unique neighborhood-driven Deep Southern American restaurant.

Started as the hub for Southern fare and pop ups, the term “Underground Kitchen” is associated with pop ups and supper clubs.  Located on the North side of the Intercoastal Waterway Bridge, GUK offers Fernandina diners the opportunity to experience southern and BBQ fare as well as delve into International flavors.  Chef Kenny nods to his childhood experiences as well as pays homage to his world travels and treats his guests with special “pop up” menu items.  Research is key for Chef Kenny and educating his guests on Indian, Thai, Polish, Caribbean ,and French fare is the the source for his passion for this concept.  He loves to educate people and pay respect to the cultures he represents though his food.  

The interior of UK evokes old-fashioned meets modern southern. Throughout the space, antique elements and touches are on display, including enameled cooking pots, milk jugs, old railroad signs, reclaimed wood window pains, burlap curtains and more. The restaurant has three main sections: GUK Sangria Bar, Muscadine Hall and Datil Pepper Park. The GUK Sangria Bar offers guests a place to relax over a glass of wine and some small bites in the comfort of a loveseat or decorative chairs, while Muscadine Hall offers the more traditional table and chair setup. Datil Pepper Park Patio will be open year-round, with a fire pit and heaters in the winter, and will also house a pepper and herb garden which the restaurant will source from.

Opened in 2016, Gilbert’s Social features seasonal and creative modern Southern fare with international influences.

Gilbert’s Social specializes in Southern and BBQ “Social Platters” where you choose ridiculously flavorful proteins and two sides. Smokers are always going with high quality meats that are a delight to any BBQ connoisseur.  Focus is on specialty entrees where your traditional Southern ingredients are played with alongside traditional international flare.  Items like pimento cheese stuffed wontons, for example are sure to excite even the most well seasoned pallet.
